Ó Laganvale (Metal Technology) Band
Bass Trombone

David Johnston
I started playing trombone in P5 at Ballyclare Primary School with Kevin Leslie.  I later attended Ballyclare High School and was involved in the NEELB music service ensembles.  I moved on to Bass Trombone from Grade 6 onwards and had a number of lessons with Adrian Morris (bass trombonist - Halle Orchestra).

In 1996 I went to Glasgow to study music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.  I studied there for 5 years and achieved a BA(Musical Studies) and MMus.  My trombone teacher was Chris Stearn (bass trombonist - Scottish Opera).  During these years I was a member of the Ulster, Irish and Scottish Youth Orchestras and really enjoyed some fantastic musical experiences.  The highlight was probably performing in The Proms at the Royal Albert Hall with the Scottish Youth Orchestra!  During my studies at music college I did a number of orchestral auditions and was added to the 'extras' list of English National Ballet.  I performed with Scottish Opera on a number of occasions.

I am currently working as a Brass Tutor in the greater Belfast area and do a lot of work with the City of Belfast School of Music.  My Christian faith is very important to me and I am a member of the New Irish Orchestra who perform regularly in the Waterfront Hall and other venues.  Laganvale (Metal Technology) Band is the only brass band that I have EVER been a member of!  I enjoy the variety of the repertoire and listening to the other players in the band.

In what little free time I do have, I enjoy 'dabbling' on the Euphonium, following Tottenham Hotspur, fishing and helping out with youth work.
